Pada Bab kelima ini mempelajari cara menyatakan kegiatan yang belum selesai baik di masa sekarang ataupun di masa lampau. 

Present Continuous Tense

Tense ini digunakan untuk menggambarkan suatu kegiatan yang sedang berlangsung pada masa sekarang, Rumus yang digunakan dalam Present Continuous Tense adalah:

(+) Subjek + be (am/is/are) + verb (-ing) + …

(-) Subjek +be (am/is/are) + not + verb (-ing) + …

(?) Be (am/is/are) + subjek + verb (-ing) + …?

Contoh:

• She is turning on the music loudly.

• Everybody is staying outside.

• I’m studying history for the test tomorrow.

• They’re looking for some texts about animals and plants in the encyclopedia.

• They are not having lunch now.

• Are you mopping the floor again?

Penggunaan keterangan waktu dalam Present Continuous Tense sangatlah penting mengingat Present Continuous Tense tidak hanya digunakan untuk menunjukkan kejadian yang berlangsung sekarang tetapi juga masa depan yang dekat. Keterangan waktu yang biasa digunakan dalam Present Continuous Tense adalah:

• Right now

• At the moment

• Today

• At present

• This month

• This year

• This week

• This semester

Past Continuous Tense

Tense ini digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu aksi sedang berlangsung selama waktu tertentu pada waktu lampau (past). Rumus yang digunakan untuk menyatakan Past Continuous Tense adalah:

S + be (was/were) + present participle (-ing). 

S + be (was/were) + not + present participle (-ing). 

be (was/were) + S + present participle (-ing)? 

Contoh:

• I was going to football practice.
• My mom and Dad were attending a wedding party.
• He was doing his Math homework.
• They were not just waiting for us.
